Anyone still confused about exactly what it is that makes a cheeky Nando's cheeky can now sit back and learn more with a new music video. The Peri Boyz, also known as David "SquatLAD" Vujanic, Mim "SpicyLAD" Shaikh, and Klayze "TinderLAD" Flaymz have created a video extolling the virtues of the spicy chicken restaurant. While Nando's has two branches in Plymouth, the video is set at Bantershire University.

Which Plymouth restaurants and cafes have zero ratings for food hygiene?

A number of Plymouth restaurants, pubs and businesses are working to improve food hygiene ratings after being given scores of 0 and 1 by Plymouth City Council inspectors. The latest Food Standards Agency rankings based on the most recent inspection reports show two dozen Plymouth eateries scoring the lowest marks. The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme judges how seriously business takes their food hygiene standards. The scheme is run by local authorities in England, Northern Ireland and Wales and applies to restaurants, pubs, cafes, takeaways, hotels, supermarkets and other food shops. Each business is given their hygiene rating when it is inspected by a food safety officer from the business's local authority. The food safety officer inspecting the business checks how well the business is meeting the law by looking at: How hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored The condition of the structure of the buildings – the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities How the business manages and records what it does to make sure food is safe At the end of the inspection, the business is given one of the six ratings from 0-5. The top rating of '5' means that the business was found to have 'very good' hygiene standards. Here are the current ratings held by the FSA as of the start of September 2015...

Why has Plymouth's celebrity chef restaurant Rhodes got a zero rating for food hygiene?

FIVE Plymouth food outlets have been given a zero hygiene rating in the latest round of inspections.

Celebrity chef Gary Rhodes' waterfront restaurant Rhodes @ The Dome, Goodbody's Bakery, the Liner Lookout, New Derriford Takeaway, and The Mount Pleasant pub all received the lowest rating of zero out of five.

The Food Standards Agency assesses each venue on laws including – how hygienically a business's food is handled and prepared, how well each business manages and records what it does to maintain the safety of its food and the condition of each businesses' building.

A statement from Rhodes @ The Dome said: "Rhodes @ The Dome operates to the highest environmental health standards and probably has one of the most advanced food technology kitchens in the region – the low score relates to not having a head chef in post at the time."

A new head chef was apparently being trained at the time of inspection, meaning no one was available to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the food hygiene act.

Rhodes @ The Dome is expecting a retest soon and anticipates a "perfect five" score.

Randy Watson, head chef at The Mount Pleasant, said that his food was perfect, and the pub's rating highlighted a neglect of paper work and labelling.

He said: "We need to work on how we label our food, as well as keeping up with documenting fridge temperatures. The score had nothing to do with the preparation of food."

The latest Food Standards Agency rankings, based on the most recent inspections, show two dozen Plymouth eateries scoring one out of five.

The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme judges how seriously businesses take their food hygiene standards.

The top rating of '5' means the business has 'very good' hygiene standards.

The Herald contacted Goodbody's Bakery, the Liner Lookout and New Derriford Takeaway, but they were unavailable for comment.

Pasty factory shut down for major food hygiene breaches

A well-known Cornish pasty maker based near Plymouth has been shut down by a court after major breaches of food hygiene standards. Cornwall Council took action against the Bakers Hatt, near Saltash, in South East Cornwall, after owner Kim Gasson failed to act on improvement notices issued last year. On Friday, Gasson pleaded guilty at Bodmin Magistrates court to offences under the Food Safety and Hygiene Regulations 2013. As a result the court made a Hygiene Prohibition banning, with immediate effect, the use of the premises or equipment at Bakers Hatt for the purposes of any food business. The court heard, previous inspections carried out by Cornwall Council's food safety team uncovered a series of hygiene failings and major breaches resulting in six food hygiene improvement notices being served in September 2014. Further visits found there had been no improvements in standards and the notices had not been complied with. The notices concerned Gasson's failure to ensure that the business was clean and maintained in good repair and condition, the lack of a documented food safety management system and staff not being adequately trained in safe food handling practices. There was also a large hole in the roof and ceiling, floor surfaces in the shop and main preparation rooms were poll while there were inadequate pest control. Prosecuting solicitor Kingsley Keat told the magistrates:, "It is disappointing that, despite all the time spent by council officers advising Ms Gasson of the improvements required to comply, the business had failed to achieve a food hygiene rating score of no more than one." Gasson was also banned from participating in the management of any food business in the future. The firm was also ordered to pay the council's costs of £6,225. Cornwall Council cabinet member for communities Geoff Brown said: "This prosecution sends out a clear message that Cornwall Council considers food safety to be extremely important. Officers work very closely with businesses to ensure they know the law and offer help and advice where they can. "However, where food business operators consistently fail to respond and seek to flout the law, prosecution is the only option available to ensure the public are protected. As a general rule I would urge the public to check hygiene ratings online before they eat out."

Closed down Plymouth restaurants to be brought back to life with new occupiers

A PAIR of former waterfront restaurants which closed down two years ago will be brought back to life with new occupiers. Sutton Harbour Holdings (SHH) has agreed leases for the buildings in East Quay House which used to house the Rocco y Lola and Asia Chic eateries. Award-winning architecture firm AWW will move into the former Asia Chic site as part of its expansion project, while the Rocco y Lola site has been let to a local firm planning to create an "innovative food experience". The name of the company has not yet been revealed. The restaurants were closed down by Edmond Davari two years ago when his company was forced into liquidation. SHH asset manager Paul James said: "We are very pleased to have completed contracts for these two prime units in the heart of Plymouth's sensational waterfront and see them brought back into permanent use. "AWW has been based at East Quay House for some time, but as the company expands we're very happy the team has chosen to relocate to larger premises within the same building in Sutton Harbour. "The second unit has been let to an exciting local company with ambitious plans for a restaurant-style offering, which will be totally new for Plymouth and something very special." Mr James added: "Sutton Harbour has continued to develop a reputation as the professional services quarter of Plymouth, with state-of-the-art office accommodation benefiting from a world-class location on one of the country's most impressive waterfronts. "With new food and drink venues continuing to open in the harbour following the recent arrivals of popular national chains such as Boston Tea Party and The Stable, we are furthering our drive to regenerate the waterfront, and create a destination to delight residents and visitors alike. These new lettings are very much part of delivering the Sutton Harbour Vision." AWW is recruiting an extra three staff which will boost its total workforce to eight. The new glass-fronted office will enable the team to face the waterfront, along with providing more office space. Architect and director Ian Sanders said: "We're delighted to be moving into larger offices, with great views to further inspire our team. "It's an exciting time here at AWW, and our expansion is a direct result of a growing portfolio of projects in the region."

Seven Plymouth pubs make it into Good Beer Guide

SEVEN Plymouth area pubs have made it into the Good Beer Guide for the first time this year.

City hostelries The Mannamead, in Mutley Plain; Nowhere Inn, in Gilwell Street; Eggbuckland's Prince Maurice; Coxside's Thistle Park Tavern; and the Waterloo Inn, in Stoke, are all included in the publication.

They are joined by South Hams pubs the Ship Inn, at Noss Mayo, and the Journey's End Inn, at Ringmore.

Ian Wood, owner of the Waterloo Inn, said he and wife Lynne were delighted to be featured after 35 years in the trade.

"We're really pleased," he said. "We have real ales on, and in bottles, and they are a good seller.

"And real cider is going well too, we have real keg cider and box cider.

"In fact, trade it pretty good, we have darts, euchre, quiz nights, it's a busy pub."

Overall, the 43rd edition of the book, published by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), lists 29 pubs in the Plymouth area.

The publication – a respected guide to UK pubs serving quality real ale – can only contain details of 29 city-area venues each year, otherwise it would be too big.

But the city, and its CAMRA branch, actually boasts about 200 real ale bars.

Each edition of the guide contains details of some newly-featured bars.

In total the new book contains details on 62 pubs in Cornwall and 125 in Devon.

And it has write-ups on 4,500 pubs nationally.

Boozers are nominated for the guide by CAMRA members at a meeting.

They then visit each pub, judging it on the quality of its real ales before voting on which ones should be included.

Each entry has details of food, opening hours, beer gardens, accommodation, transport links, disabled facilities and real ales on sale, including local ales.

The Good Beer Guide is independent and makes no charge for entries.

Pubs are regularly checked by CAMRA volunteers – there are 850 members in the region, with 175,000 nationally.

The guide also contains features on pubs, beer and brewing, and lists CAMRA beer festivals nationally, as well as a list of real ale breweries, including those in the Plymouth area such as Summerskills and Dartmoor Brewery, alongside 29 in Cornwall, and 42 in Devon.

Eight new real ale breweries are listed for Devon: Big Rabbit, in Butterleigh; Braunton, in Braunton; Grampus, in Lee Bay; Madrigal, in Combe Martin; Occasional, in Silverton; Tally Ho! at Hatherleigh; and two in Totnes: Totem and Totnes Brewing Company.

Roger Protz, the guide's editor, said: "British brewing has never been in better health, with a third consecutive year of over 10 per cent growth and more different beers being brewed than ever before. The range of beers available to beer drinkers now is colossal and we're seeing real competition between pubs who want to serve the best selection."

Morrisons to close 11 supermarkets and sell off convenience stores in jobs threat to Plymouth workers

ELEVEN Morrisons supermarkets are to close as part of cost-cutting plans that could lead to 900 job losses. The retail chain is also to sell off its convenience stores - such as those on Plymouth's Mutley Plain - as part of the cuts planned. It is part of plans to overhaul the business after Morrisons posted a 47 per cent drop in half yearly profits before tax of £126million. It is selling 140 loss-making "M" local convenience stores for about £25million. They are to be rebranded as "My Local" and staff will keep their jobs. It is not thought the two Plymouth Morrisons superstores - at Outland Road and at Plymstock - will be affected.

Plymouth to get new Tesco store

A NEW Tesco store is set to open up in Plymouth with a 24-hour facility, it has been revealed. The retail giant is to build its new Tesco Express near Mutley - less than half a mile from an existing branch. The new convenience store at a busy junction on Alexandra Road will double up as a petrol station. Tesco won planning permission for the scheme almost a year ago but is now in talks with the council over its final designs. Bosses have submitted planning applications for the advertising hoardings, signs and 24-hour cash machine that will be at the site. The store will spring up on the site of the former Texaco garage, known locally as the Vale Service Station. That closed several months ago and the former petrol station has been empty ever since. Two new student flats blocks are now nearby, including one on the site of the recently-demolished St Augustine's Church. Tesco has asked Plymouth City Council for permission to put up three signs, including one which will be illuminated, as well as bollards, plant machinery, the all-night ATM and advertising hoardings. When built the new Tesco Express will have 13 car parking spaces, including one disabled space and four cycle spaces. The store will be built from scratch after the old Texaco pumps are demolished.

ONE of Plymouth's KFC outlets is to get a new look – including outdoor seating. The fast food chain's branch just off Tavistock Road in Crownhill is to get the facelift. The outlet, which also boasts a drive-thru, is to get new seating and umbrellas outside, along with new plants, planters, astroturf and a fence. A revamp is also planned for some of its windows and doors which will include new a paint finish. A planning application has been submitted to Plymouth City Council as the chain also seeks permission for new advertising at the site. Documents state: "It is proposed to refurbish this trading restaurant internally and externally. "The proposed works are of a small scale and will improve the building in terms of appearance and presence."

Eating out: find your way to Plymouth's Wildwood

An historic location, stunning dining space and well-thought- out menu are ingredients helping Wildwood to shed the chain restaurant label. Louise Daniel takes a look at Royal William Yard's latest addition...

AS WE throw off yet another variable Plymouth summer, thoughts inevitably turn to indoor gatherings and comfort food.

Okay, so slivers of sun still cut through the September chill on fine days but the turn of the seasons imminent and al fresco eating is slipping off the radar.

It's natural to start looking for hearty food; heavy carbs, meaty feasts and full bodied wines to nurse us through the darker months.

And we need indoor eating-out environments which are pretty, roomy and relaxed. Wildwood, based at the Slaughterhouse in Royal William Yard, is one of those places.

Restoration of the building in which this 210 seater restaurant sits, is sympathetic to the historic building.

What you get is exposed brickwork, vaulted ceilings and flagged floors sitting comfortably with modern fixtures and fittings creating a relaxed, comfortable space.

On this beautiful September afternoon I'm sitting with Tia Grace-Mae, area manager for Wildwood South West who reveals the work it took to transform the listed building.

"It was two years in the planning – about a year ago we found this site. Because of where and what the site is, the planning is different to a usual opening.

"It is so much more detailed. You've got to give Urban Splash credit; they really turned this place around."

The layout is paradoxically open and cosy – banquettes mean people can sit together for a gathering of evening fun, alone for a lunch date or secluded in a 'nook' for a private tete a tete.

The original "cow shed" is now a glass fronted atrium with sliding doors and large booths, so you can enjoy the outdoor court yard and catch the last of the summer rays without the nip of the late season.

There is an open plan kitchen which is contemporary and on view; I watch as orders are prepared and the hardworking chefs skip from oven to grill, dexterously creating dishes with heart and flavour.

The gourmet delicatessen also offers amazing food which can be taken away for a picnic (they supply hampers) or eaten on site – from salads and bread to good wines and locally sourced jams.

A foodie through and through, Tia is very enthusiastic about the Wildwood brand, and genuinely thrilled about the Royal William site.

"There are lots of possibilities with this restaurant, it can only grow and the deli is my little love affair!"

Tia rose through the Wildwood ranks very quickly – at 29 she's a very young area manager.

But she is clear that loving the work is the deciding factor when it comes to making a career out of hospitality.

"The thing about the food industry is that you can start as a waiter and end up as an operations director. You can come into catering with a degree and it doesn't matter."

She's right – hospitality is a level playing field and is probably, as Tia testifies, one of the only industries where you can progress quickly if you have the 'taste' for it.

Wildwood encourages staff to excel and move forward and this inclusive and encouraging atmosphere is a key element of the chain's success.

The chain is the brainchild of Sam Kaye – a member of the family who brought well-loved food brands to the high street - ASK, Garfunkles and the Italian-inspired Prezzo among others. They clearly know their stuff.

Here at Royal William Yard – Wildwood's second Plymouth opening – it translates to a well-thought out space, excellent service and menu in touch with modern consumers demand for a quality.

Tia is very proud and heartily extols the brand ethos of putting the customer at the centre of the deal, but is keen to point out that it starts with a team passion for the work.

"Everyone is hand-picked. This is a customer-facing industry and we want people – like me – who really love what they do.

"We've got that here. I'm very proud of the team; it really is a group effort at Wildwood."

It's true to say that food culture is the best it's ever been in Plymouth. This doesn't just mean cultural diversity, it also encourages restaurants to up their game and create experiences which mirror our evolving demand for good value and a quality product.

Of course the place and people are key to the overall experience, but without decent food the shine is quickly off any eatery.

The food at Wildwood is tricky to define, I venture that it's a distillation of Italian classics combined with (what have come to be known as) menu staples and the odd Eastern flourish. It feels familiar but that isn't a bad thing – in some ways it's very comforting.

Tia acknowledges it's hard to classify their menu.

"I would say we're Italian themed. We get tied in with Italian because of the pizza, pasta and risotto, but we do so much more which isn't strictly speaking, Italian food.

"I don't know that I would define the food here – it changes daily.

"I think when you eat Wildwood food you know that it's ours. It's good food."

Here you will find freshly made, piping hot bread, baked mushrooms with gorgonzola, spinach and walnuts, oven roasted chicken with a pleasing char; great pizzas, ribs, fresh pasta and a very healthy daily specials board.

"All the producers we work with – particularly in the deli – are small, artisan producers.

"These are tiny little producers who supply excellent food."

Today I'm treated to specials board favourite, cob salad, which is less salad and more banquet – grilled avocado, juicy chicken thigh, charred sweetcorn, cos lettuce and spinach brought together with a classic Caesar dressing. Delicious.

According to Paul Weller we should find our way out of the wild wood but you might find this restaurant is full of all the good things you deserve.

15 trouble drinkers indefinitely banned from 20 Plymouth pubs

FIFTEEN people accused of persistently causing trouble on the Barbican have been indefinitely banned from 20 Plymouth pubs.

And police and publicans say there has been a drop in booze-related crime on the Barbican.

This month's meeting of Barbican Pubwatch heard how the August Bank Holiday had passed off peacefully after a trouble-free year.

The Pubwatch group of about 20 pubs and clubs, which was reconvened last year after a hiatus, has handed "indefinite" bans to about 15 persistent "nuisances" in a bid to keep trouble at bay.

And police and Plymouth City Council chiefs are backing and praising the group for its efforts.

Pubwatch chairman, Ivor Edmunds, said: "We've had a fantastic year. Statistically, trouble is right down.

"More families are coming to the Barbican, which was always our aim. It's unrecognisable."

He said an influx of quality restaurants into the waterfront had changed the mix, and behaviour, of people.

And the pubs had upped their game too, by providing good food.

And he added: "If people come to cause trouble they are banned and not allowed in anywhere."

Jock McIndoe, police licensing officer, said the force was happy to help Barbican Pubwatch enforce the bans it had handed out.

"We're backing them all the way," he said.

"There's been a substantial reduction in incidents of alcohol-related crime on Bank Holiday weekends this year – which is very welcome."

He said the Barbican was still suffering slightly from an "unwarranted reputation" hanging over from days gone by.

But he highlighted the huge difference between "the historic and modern" Barbican.

"The character of the area has substantially changed," he said. "And the clientele has changed with that."

"Historically we had families here until 3pm and then it was drinking," he said. "Over the past 18 months that's shifted. The drinking is coming later.

"They are still catering for evening and night-time trade but also family groups in a far happier and more comfortable environment."

He said the relationship between the licensed trade and authorities such as the police and council was "light years ahead" of what it had been eight years ago.

"The trade has changed its outlook and provision to something more modern," he said. "This group is sharing best practice and moving forward. Everyone understands everyone's responsibilities and there is a common goal."

Cllr Philippa Davey, Cabinet member for Safer and Stronger Communities, said: "We are pleased to see the Barbican Pubwatch scheme has proved to be a success and wish them well.

"Its members are in and around the Barbican day-in and day-out and have a good idea of what needs to be done to make the area even better.

"Our licensing team helped the scheme get off the ground and continues to support the group. "The Barbican is a buzzing place and is rightly hugely popular with visitors and residents. We support efforts to make it an even safer destination for families and people wanting to enjoy a top night out.

"We encourage other groups of licensees in other areas to get together as it is clear that working together pays off."

Plymouth gastro pub retains Michelin Star

PLYMOUTH'S Masterchef has hung onto his Michelin Star.

Chef Anton Piotrowski and his wife, Clare, took on The Treby Arms, in Sparkwell just four years ago.

After winning its first prestigious star last year the pub has retained the accolade after the new 2016 Michelin Guide was released early.

The new guide to fine dining was released a day earlier than planned on Twitter after a bookshop published the winners ahead of schedule.

Anton grew up in Ivybridge, attending the local Community College and then training as a chef at Plymouth College of Further Education.

After the embargo was broken the eaterie posted: "The atmosphere here @thetrebyarms is buzzing with excitement! We've only gone and retained our #MichelinStar To our team....we're #soproud!"

Michael Caines who has 16 continuous years of stars at Gidleigh Park, at Chagford on Dartmoor, retained his two stars.

Caines is currently developing a new restaurant at Courtlands, in Lympstone near Exeter, where he hopes to secure a third star.

In Cornwall, Nathan Outlaw keeps his single star at Outlaw's Fish Kitchen in Port Isaac.

Nathan also retains the two stars he has for Restaurant Nathan Outlaw which moved from St Enodoc Hotel in Rock to Port Isaac.

Also holding on to one star are Paul Ainsworth at No 6 in Padstow, The Driftwood, Portscatho, The Room in The Elephant, Torquay and The Masons Arms at Knowstone.

There are 15 new single stars and two new two stars in this year's guide.

The new two stars are both Japanese restaurants in London: Araki and Umu.

The new One Stars in London include Lyle's, Bonhams, Portland and the Dining Room at the

Goring, and in Leeds there's a Star for The Man Behind the Curtain.

Rebecca Burr, editor of the Michelin Guide, said: "The next generation of chefs are really coming through to give the established chefs a run for their money.

"They all have their own individual style and their ability – coupled with their confidence – looks set to lead them on to great things."

SEVEN Plymouth area pubs have been included in the Good Beer Guide for the first time this year.

The publication – a respected guide to UK pubs serving quality real ale – can only contain details of 29 city-area venues each year, otherwise it would be too big.

But the city, and its CAMRA branch, actually boasts about 200 real ale bars.

Ian Dickinson, vice chairman of CAMRA's Plymouth branch, pictured below, said the Good Beer Guide was compiled from the recommendations of members.

"We are consumers," he said. "And we don't charge for entries, unlike some other guides.

"It's a national publication, and there are about 55,000 pubs nationally, but there's no way we can include all of them in a book, just like in football you couldn't have all 92 league clubs in one division."

This is what the Good Beer guide has to say about Plymouth area pubs:

Brass Monkey, Royal Parade – "ale festivals throughout the year".

Britannia Inn, Milehouse – "built in the 1830s".

Dolphin Hotel, Barbican – "a Plymouth institution".

Fawn Private Members Club, Greenbank – "named after HMS Fawn".

Lord High Admiral, Stonehouse – "in an area undergoing regeneration".

Lounge, Devonport – "street corner local".

Community leader's concerns over plans for another fast food restaurant

FAST food giant Kentucky Fried Chicken has applied to turn a former service station into a drive-thru restaurant – but local campaigners have raised health concerns over the request. KFC wants to open up another branch close to the one it already runs in St Budeaux. If the plans are approved by Plymouth City Council (PCC), the 246sqm restaurant on Wolseley Road will create 30 jobs – 12 full time and 18 part-time. In total 50 people will be employed at the new outlet, with 20 existing KFC employees moving to the St Budeaux site. The service station has lain unused since 2013, having previously been a petrol station since 1971. But it would also be in an area which the council is considering placing under a kind of "obesity saturation policy". In May, the council's planning department explained that an objective of the Plymouth Plan -which is currently being drafted – is to limit the amount of takeaways allowed in any one area, meaning "over-saturation" could become grounds for refusal of fast food restaurants. The Plymouth Plan is a document setting out the direction Plymouth wants to develop. PCC said in May that 20 per cent of St Budeaux businesses were already takeaways and the area had an obesity problem. Pat Patel, manager of Tamar View Community Centre in Barne Barton, is in the middle of fundraising £2.5million to build a doctors' surgery, pharmacy and nursery. He raised serious concerns about the type of message it would send out in allowing another KFC to open up in St Budeaux. "We have more than our fair share of takeaways up here," said the navy veteran. "If you look down St Budeaux Square, there is already a KFC. It does a tremendous business with a massive queue any night of the week but I don't know if that justifies it opening another one though. It doesn't send out a good message full-stop, never mind a good health message. "This is on Barne Barton's doorstep. I know people will say it creates jobs but what about the other KFC in St Budeaux - will that really remain open?".@ Speaking in May, Bill Stevens, co-chair of the planning committee, said: "On the main high street in St Budeaux there are quite a lot of takeaways already so it's not as though there isn't already a choice. One of the objectives of the Plymouth Plan is that we do produce a healthy and fit population and do try to cut down on as many fast food and junk food areas." Those wishing to comment on the plans can write to the council at planningconsents@plymouth.gov.uk by October 13.

Devon man finds best cream teas in the world after trying 250 of them

$

A man dubbed the 'Cream Tea Crusader' believes he has finally found the Holy Grail of afternoon teas - after testing 250 different versions in just five months. Scone-lover Ditch Townsend, 49, is dedicated to seeking out Britain's best place for a cream tea - and will often devour up to EIGHT in one day. He prefers the 'Devon' method - cream on first - but has developed a formula to judge the scone, jam, cream, tea and setting - and has come across one place that ticks all the boxes. After a lengthy search, he claims the best around is The Old Forge Cafe in Chagford in the stunning rolling hills of Dartmoor National Park in Devon. Father-of-four Ditch, who records all his reviews in an online blog, said: "My favourite is the Old Forge Cafe, for a few reasons. "Firstly because it is a lovely setting, the cafe itself is tastefully done out and run by a doctor who prefers to use his culinary skills. "Secondly the scone is presented beautifully in a little basket, with lovely leaf tea. "Thirdly they serve an unbelievably tasty cream tea with very tasty jam. "They have the whole package. For me, it is the gold standard for a cream team - but I'm looking for someone to beat it." Married Ditch, from Eggesford, Devon, embarked on his crusade after taking a sabbatical from his career in the care industry. He says that as long as people stick to wholesome ingredients then there isn't much to go wrong with a cream tea. But he said he was disappointed by the overall standard he has come across in several places. The cardinal sin is to not use clotted cream - and setting an ambiance is just as important as the food. He said: "This hunt was all just inspired by my love of cream teas. "Having settled in Devon for the last six years I discovered there is a huge range in quality. "I'm really disappointed when I come across, which happens very often actually, cream teas which could be easily improved. "I just want to let people know where the good places are. "There's a lot of personal preference, but I would weed out anything that doesn't come with clotted cream. "Then I would weed out the places which aren't a relaxing place - I'm sure that many of them do a nice cream tea, but I would never have one in a shopping centre, or a department store, it has to be somewhere nice." Ditch also says the perfect cream tea needs a good choice of jam. He said: "The typical strawberry jam is actually quite insipid in a cream tea, gooseberry of plum or blackcurrant work much better. "You need to have a jam which actually has fruit in it, and tastes like what it's supposed to be. "About a quarter of the ones I have tried have what I would describe as a red flavoured blob. It is very off putting, there's no need for it, all you need to do is buy some jam with some fruit in it. "It doesn't have to be Cornish cream, a Devon cream tea in Devon should have Devon cream though. "As for the scone, please don't offer me donut mix, some people squish them up with a bit of milk and pretend it's a scone, it's just ugh. "Apart from that, I'm very open." Not surprisingly, Ditch has strong opinions on the debate between the 'Devon' and 'Cornish' methods. "I prefer the cream on first, but not because it is the Devon thing, it's just my preference," he said. "I have a moustache, so I need a cream that if it goes on first it acts as plaster so that the jam doesn't fall off - if you put the jam on first it will always just fall off." His next two favourites are Nelly May's in Ilfracombe, the Corn Dolly in South Molton and the Oak Barn in Budleigh Salterton - all in Devon. Ditch's journey around cream tea shops is not yet complete, but he said the calories are starting to become a problem. He said: "The biggest danger I face is all those calories. "I do between six and eight cream teas in a day, but I only come across one or two places that I like in a day. "I try to eat just one eighth of a scone with cream and another eighth without, but I lose the odd battle when I stumble into somewhere exceptional. "My next task is to tackle the swathe of places around Devon's south coast and I am expecting another hundred reviews at least." Ditch's blog can be found at http://devoncreamteas.info/

Wines in the City: Stephen Barrett explains wine tasting - part two

$

LAST week I alluded to how a wine tasting works. This week I will offer tasting notes on the tasting we so much enjoyed last week.

The subject of a wine tasting is also important as seasons, vintages, fashionable styles and grapes are all up for consideration.

The tasting of wines from Tim Adams a noted wine maker from Clare Valley in South Australia was eagerly awaited. His wines are geared for specialist shops, restaurants and those of you who might consider spending few quid more for a whole lot more in taste and style. In other words he is a specialist, plying his trade from his home and vineyards in Clare Valley which are approx 130k north of Adelaide.

The climate could best be described as (mainly) Mediterranean. The long growing season is excellent for fully ripened grapes with the added value of abundance when all is in place.

The differing soils and locations are home to Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Grenache, Merlot, Cabernet Franc plus a few hectares of Tempranillo.

Unlike other wine making districts from around the world Clare Valley offers a cornucopia of grapes for the wine maker to play with. Tim Adams does just that, his wines are always made with care and style offering excellent value throughout the range.

Starting with Tim Adams Riesling 2012 Tesco on-line £10.79 offering classy lime and lemon scents with a bone-dry structure, try with good old Soused Mackerel !

Tim Adams Pinot Gris 2012 Tesco on-line £8.00 (offer) Grab it whilst you can! Rich and full of soft ripe fruit with 13% of alcohol to hold it together, would best describe this wine. Brilliant with Smoked Salmon from Mike's Smokehouse in Loddiswell.

Food: the Eddystone Inn

The Eddystone Inn's beautiful views and a corking specials board are just two reasons to head to Heybrook Bay says Louise Daniel.

Pubs are part of British history and sadly closing at an alarming rate – it's easy to forget they're important in our eating out culture.

Ok, so some pub grub leaves alot to be desired and there are places which do exactly what you expect – two for ones, fried stuff and cheap booze. And they rightly have their place at the table.

The pubs which work best for foodies have talented cooks creating refreshed British classics with top local produce. They understand what we want from proper pub grub feast – familiar food, done well in hearty portions.

Travelling to pubs like these is worth it.

Along with unfettered views of Heybrook Bay from the well-proportioned terrace and refreshed dining room, there is a corking specials board at The Eddystone Inn which makes winding through the patchwork of Devon countryside and a near miss with a tractor wholly rewarding.

It's a daring (and worthy) new pub opening in a challenging hospitality market.

Owners Sam Rouse, Tim Goss and business partner Darren Martin re-opened the sixty year old pub on July 4 after it had lain empty for twelve months.

I gather it's been hard work and a stressful time for them. Sam agrees. She's been putting in around ninety hours a week to get the pub just right, with Tim acknowledging they opened at a hectic time in the hospitality trade.

"We had to hit the ground running because it was the busiest period in July. There was a lot of interest because The Eddystone had been shut for a year."

It's not altogether surprising the work has been demanding, not least because Sam's background is in local government accounting while Tim is a businessman.

The trade can be difficult enough to navigate for seasoned professionals, so why buy a pub?

"The reason we bought this place is we used to sit out there too often," laughs Tim as he nods to the terrace. We used to walk here and always say that it was a great location and we'd love to get our hands on it and do something with it," agrees Sam.

"Around 12 months later it came on the market. It was a sign."

The couple built a beautiful, contemporary home round the corner (and over the hill) from the pub in Wembury over-looking the Mewstone four years ago.

They saw potential in The Eddystone which used to be HMS Cambridge's hangout before it was decommissioned in 2001 even though it was gloomy and outdated.

"It was in a mess when we took it over," says Tim. It was dark and dingy and not very nice at all.

"The ceilings were blue which made it feel closed in.

"We weren't going to open it (as a pub) originally because we were looking to redevelop the whole site with a more modern pub."

Potential ground breaking on the "in-the-pipeline" project isn't likely for a couple of years, so they thought they'd spruce up the place and see how they fared as publicans.

Sam says they had their work cut out to bring the decor up to date, so enlisted family members to get stuck in with paint brushes.

"It was a family effort, we didn't have any builders in, we did it all ourselves.

"We were in here for three months before opening – there were no tables or chairs, everything was gone."

With grey-blue paint hiding dark panelling, white washed walls, new furniture, flourishes of the sea side and a terrific menu bursting with locally sourced fresh flavours, the place couldn't be more different than the run down pub they took over. But that was just the start of the hard work.

"We opened with no experience whatsoever of running a pub and I've been on every course you could possibly mention," says Sam. We've been fire-fighting but when we sit and think about it, we've done okay."

Sam and Tim certainly fell on their feet when they recruited chef Chris Birmingham – a professional with over twenty years experience and a AA two rosette background – who comes to them by way of the Atlantic Hotel on the Isles of Scilly.

Wisely leaving the food decisions where they should be – in the kitchen – the couple's faith in Chris' talents is being paid back in spades with well thought out flavours, just enough innovation and big plates of yummy food.

The chalk board has a handful of hearty, comforting and wholesome dishes with a base in classic British cuisine – lamb, braised ox cheek and pork belly.

He's servicing the best produce the West Country has to offer with aplomb, and isn't afraid to add European flourishes like sun dried tomato, olive and artichoke, fabulously fresh fish and deeply flavoured sauces.

He is also confident enough to experiement creating fluently fragrant dishes in a fusion of East meets West.

Take the Thai green curry risotto with pan fried sea bass – on paper a curiosity – in practice it's delicate, zingy, fresh and comforting with the velvety mouth-feel and slight bite a good risotto brings.

The rice is delicately accented with fresh coriander, coconut, lime and there's the pleasing afterglow of well-handled green chilli.

Fresh sea bass is tender, juicy and treated with respect – the sign of a cook who knows his stuff.

But let's be clear, this is a pub.

It isn't trendy food which whacks you round the head with fusions, foams and finicky frou-frou; it's real, elbows on table, let's-talk-about-it food which is both the star and the back-drop to a lovely afternoon out. There is nothing calculating here other than the desire to make your mouth water and fill you up.

The wine list is good too. You'll find Zinfandel, Malbec, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay which has been personally selected by Sam.

The bar is equally well-stocked for beer drinkers. The Eddystone is freehold but they generally go with St Austell Breweries; Jail Ale, Tribute and a guest ale which changes every month.

Pubs may come and go and food fashions evolve and change, but good food, cooked well never goes out of fashion. And a stunning view doesn't hurt either.

On the menu

Thai green curry risotto with pan fried sea bream. Creamy el dente rice works well with eastern flavours. Micro herbs for extra bite and meaty fish flesh and salty crisp skin.

Slow braised shank of lamb on artichoke and black olive mash with sun dried tomato jus. A classic winter warmer treated to a European makeover. Black olive and sun dried tomato complements the soft fragrant lamb – the mash is creamy with a faint whiff of earthy artichoke. The jus is meaty and finished with red wine – more a gravy – and definitely spoon worthy.

Brandy and chocolate torte. Soft, creamy, light and crustless – spun sugar and a punchy raspberry coulis make this a far from sickly-sweet.

Could new trade deal pose a threat to Plymouth's favourite lunchtime treat?

PLYMOUTH favourite the Cornish pasty could be threatened by foreign imitations under a new EU trade deal. Labour MP Geraint Davies has warned that an agreement between the EU, Canada and the US could weaken existing laws that protect regional specialities from being copied. He said the UK could be flooded by cheap, non-authentic products that could "bind governments for 20 years". Mr Davies tabled a Bill in the House of Commons earlier this year to protect certain foods such as the pasty. It came after Germany warned that the EU would not be able to uphold laws protecting regional foods under the so-called Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. Christian Schmidt, the German agriculture minister, said that protections for regional specialities - such as Cornwall's famous meat pastry to Germany's Black Forest Ham - might have to be dropped as the price for such a deal. "If we want to take advantage of the opportunities of free trade with the huge American market, we can no longer have every type of sausage and cheese each protected as a speciality," he told Spiegel magazine at the time. Under EU law protected regional specialities, such as the Cornish pasty, can only be sold under their traditional names if they were actually made in the region. The legal protections are enforced in Europe but not in America where immigrants, such as Cornish copper miners or Bavarian farmers, have taken European food traditions and made them their own.

OUR Then picture was taken at the height of the fizzy keg era, forty years ago, since when the Hyde Park Hotel has closed a few times, seemingly never to open again, but since it's last re-opening in 2014 it has never been busier.

Internally, back Then the Hyde Park sported four distinct areas, a public bar, lounge bar, spit and sawdust, bottle and jug area, with a first floor bar that was regularly deployed as a folk club.

Little changed outwardly, it has been altered significantly inside.

Meanwhile the signage tells another story, and the recent addition of large area of decking tells yet another.

The outdoor area offers an interesting perspective for smokers and others from which to watch the world go.

An iconic building standing in a traffic island at the northern end of Mutley Plain, the landmark red-brick structure wasn't always surrounded by traffic, it was once a a prominent corner location, however in the early part of the twentieth century a road was driven around its western side and it has been on an island site ever since.

A classic Victorian, almost London-style licensed premises, the Hyde Park sits at the end of Plymouth's Hyde Park road in area where there are a number of London-themed street names.
